Globe and Mail - Canada

January 21, 2009

JERUSALEM — U.S. President Barack Obama's first full day in office certainly made a big impression on some people. And his first overseas telephone call, to Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas, stunned Palestinians and many Israelis as well.

“We were not expecting such a quick call from President Obama, but we knew how serious he is about the Palestinian problem,” said a very excited Yasser Abed Rabbo, a senior adviser to Mr. Abbas. (Read More)

Tova Tzimuki

Ynet News – Tel Aviv, Israel

January 19, 2009

IDF officers intending to travel to Europe, whether for business or pleasure, have been advised to contact the Judge Advocate General's Office prior to leaving Israel; and some may be instructed not to leave the country.

The advisory has been issued following Israel's concern that international arrest warrants may be issued against officers who were involved in the Israeli offensive in Gaza, on charges of war crimes.

Jerusalem has reportedly received several reports suggesting international human rights groups are in the process of gathering evidence in the form of photos and testimonials, with the intent of filing suits both with the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague and in local European courts. "We are preparing for a wave of international lawsuits over the operation in Gaza," said Attorney General Menachem Mazuz Sunday. "That in itself is nothing new. I can only assume that following the events, we will have more intensive and focused work ahead of us."

Speaking at a Jerusalem Center for Ethics conference, Mazuz stressed that the Judge Advocate General was involved in the authorization process of every strike in Operation Cast Lead, but that the final decision was still at the hands of the IDF. (Read More)

US Accused of Killing 25 Afghan Civilians in Raid on “Militants”

Saeed Shah (in Islamabad)

The Guardian, UK

January 22, 2009

The US military is investigating claims that more than two dozen Afghan civilians were killed during an attack on militants. The issue has badly undermined support for the international coalition and President Hamid Karzai. As Karzai seeks re-election later this year, he has used the issue of civilian deaths to try to distance himself from the west and has repeatedly called for more care to be taken by coalition troops. McClatchy Newspapers

Wednesday 21 January 2009

Attorney General nominee Eric Holder's nomination has been delayed because of his views on torture.

Washington - Key Republicans delayed a vote on Wednesday on the confirmation of attorney general nominee Eric Holder in part over concerns that he views Bush administration interrogation practices as torture.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a senior member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said he wanted to know more after Holder sidestepped questions about whether he intends to prosecute officials who condoned or carried out the interrogations. "He's been very ambiguous," Cornyn told reporters. " (Read More)
