What’s going on here? Why the enormous,
almost panicky, overreaction to
what is a rather simple point about U.S. foreign policy? Why the attempts
to suppress, distort, and misrepresent? What are they so scared of?
The answer is very simple:
The Republican establishment knows that if the American people conclude
that Ron Paul is right, the jig is up with respect to the big-government, pro-empire, inter-ventionist
foreign policy that
Republicans (and many Democrats) have supported for many years.
Paul’s point is a straightforward one: U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East generated the
anger that motivated the 9/11 terrorists. If he had had more time, Paul
undoubtedly would have pointed out the U.S. policies in the Middle East
that made people so angry:
(1) the U.S. government’s ardent
support of Saddam Hussein and the furnishing of
biological and chemical weapons of mass destruction to him;
(2) the more than 10
years of brutal sanctions against Iraq, which contributed to the deaths of hundreds of
thousands of Iraqi children;
(3) UN Ambassador
Madeleine Albright’s infamous statement to Sixty Minutes that
the deaths of half a million Iraqi children from the sanctions had been “worth it”;
(4) the stationing of
U.S. troops on Islamic holy lands, knowing the adverse impact such action
would have on Muslims;
(5) the “no-fly
zones,” which were never
authorized by either the UN or the U.S. Congress and which killed still
more Iraqis, including
13-year-old Omran Harbi Jawair, whose head was shot off by a U.S.
missile while he was tending his sheep in 2000; and
(6) the long-time, unconditional financial and military
aid provided the Israeli government.

Wednesday for a rare daylight assembly off Iran’s coast in what
naval officials said was the largest
such move since the 2003 Iraq war.
U.S.
Navy officials said Iran had not been notified of plans to sail the
vessels, which include two aircraft carriers, through the Straits of
Hormuz, a narrow channel in international waters off Iran’s coast and a
major artery for global oil shipments.

In A [Self-Precipitated] ‘Catastrophic Emergency’

The Bush administration has released a directive called the National
Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive. The
directive released on May 9th, 2007 has gone almost unnoticed by the
mainstream and alternative media. This is
understandable considering the huge Ron Paul and immigration news but
this story is equally as huge. In this directive, Bush
declares that in the event of a “Catastrophic Emergency” the President
will be entrusted with leading the activities to ensure constitutional
government. The language in this directive would in effect make the
President a dictator in the case of such an emergency.
The
directive defines a “Catastrophic
Emergency” as the
following.
"Catastrophic Emergency" means any incident, regardless
of location, that results in extraordinary
levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the
U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government
functions;
So what does this mean?
This is entirely subjective and doesn’t provide any real concrete definition of what such an emergency
would entail. Assuming that it means a disaster on the scale of the 9/11
attacks or Katrina, there is no question that the United States at
some point in time will experience an emergency on par with either of
those events. When one of those events takes place, the President will be
a dictator in charge of ensuring a working constitutional government.
The language written in the
directive is disturbing because it doesn’t say that the
President will work with the other branches of government equally to
ensure a constitutional government is protected. It
says clearly that there will be a cooperative effort among the three
branches that will be coordinated by the President. If the
President is coordinating these efforts it effectively puts him in charge
of every branch. The language in the directive is entirely
Orwellian in nature making it seem that it is a cooperative effort
between all three branches but than it says that the President is in
charge of the cooperative effort.
The directive defines
Enduring Constitutional Government as the following.
"Enduring Constitutional Government," or
"ECG," means a cooperative effort among the executive,
legislative, and judicial branches of the Federal Government, coordinated
by the President, as a matter of comity with respect to the legislative
and judicial branches and with proper respect for the constitutional
separation of powers among the branches, to preserve the constitutional
framework under which the Nation is governed and the capability of all three
branches of government to execute constitutional responsibilities and
provide for orderly succession, appropriate transition of leadership, and
interoperability and support of the National Essential Functions during a
catastrophic emergency;
Further on in the document
it states the following.
The President shall lead the activities of the Federal Government
for ensuring constitutional government.

As everyone except for a dwindling band of Bush
supporters now knows, the US is in a terrible situation in Iraq from
which it cannot extract itself. For Bush and Cheney, their own pride
and delusion are more compelling than US casualties, the destruction of
Iraq and its people, and the inflaming of sectarian strife and
anti-American violence throughout the Middle East.
Congress
is complicit in the great strategic blunder. Republican flag-wavers led
Americans like lemmings into the abyss. The Democrats have already
abandoned the electorate that gave them Control of Congress six months
ago in the false hope that the Democrats would corral the White House
Moron and lead America out of the abyss. Like the Republicans, the
Democrats serve the few special-interest groups that benefit, or believe
that they benefit, from the war. By now we all know who these groups are:
the oil industry, the military-security complex, and the Israel Lobby, AIPAC.
This contrived war, based on lies and deception, serves no other
interest.
There is no
longer any question whatsoever, not a single sliver of doubt, that
Americans were deceived into this disastrous war. The President of the
United States lied to the American people, as did the Vice President, the
National Security Advisor, the Secretary of State, the Secretary of
Defense, the Deputy Secretary of Defense, the Under--secretary of
Defense, as did every neoconservative in the Bush administration, think tanks,
and media.
The
fact that the American people were lied to and deceived does not absolve
them from blame. The lie was transparent, the logic non-existent,
the true facts available and easy to discover.
America
failed, because the American people failed. The American people
failed, because their self-righteousness and their hubris made them easy
saps for deception.
Even
now after five years of a disastrous policy, Republicans cannot accept
the facts about the US invasion and failed occupation of Iraq. At the recent
"debate" between Republican presidential candidates in South
Carolina, US Representative Ron Paul dared to tell the truth. Rep. Paul
said that our difficulties in the Middle East are "blowback"
from our government’s determined attempts to exercise hegemony over
the Middle East.
Republican
presidential candidate Rudy
Giuliani, a person who sunk so low as to frame innocents while serving
as US Attorney in order to boost his name recognition, played the
self-righteous card to extreme. How dare Ron Paul suggest that US policy toward
Muslims has anything whatsoever to do with attacks on the US! With all
the outrage he could muster, Giuliani asked Rep. Paul "to withdraw
that comment and tell us that he didn’t really mean that."
The thunderous
applause from the Republican audience to Giuliani’s put-down of
the only honest person present underlines that the Republican Party is incapable
of leadership to end a futile and lost war that under international
standards is a war crime, an unprovoked naked aggression based entirely
on lies, deception and a secret agenda.
At
other times, the Republican audience applauded in support of
torture and greeted John McCain’s protest against the practice with cold
silence.

Missile System Ready To Defend Moscow

Russia's new state-of-the-art S-400
missile defense system will be operational around Moscow by the beginning
of July. The commander of the Russian Air Force, three-star Col. Gen.
Alexander Zelin, made the announcement Monday, RIA Novosti reported. RIA
Novosti described the S-400 Triumf system, designated by NATO as the
SA-21 Growler, as "a new air defense missile system developed by the
Almaz Central Design Bureau as an upgrade of the S-300 family."
"On July 1,
one battalion of S-400 missile defense system will be put on combat duty
to defend the airspace of Moscow and Central Russia," Zelin said.
According to the
RIA Novosti report, Zelin said an S-400 battalion was still undergoing
training and it would become operational on July 1, operating out of the
town of Elektrostal in the Moscow oblast, or region.
RIA Novosti said
the S-400 "has been designed to intercept and destroy airborne
targets at a distance of up to 400 kilometers (250 miles), or twice the
range of the MIM-104 Patriot, and 2.5 times that of the S-300PMU-2."
The news agency
noted that in April, Col. Gen. Yury Solovyov, the head of Russia's Air
Defense Forces Special Command, previously known as the Moscow Military
District Air Defense Command, said the S-400 system could also be used
for limited purposes in missile and space defense. However, it was not
designed to destroy intercontinental ballistic missiles, he said.
RIA Novosti also
quoted Solovyov as claiming that the S-400 had the ability to destroy
stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles with an
effective range of up to 2,200 miles and a speed of up to 3 miles per
second, or 10,800 miles per hour.
RIA Novosti said
Russia's Air Defense Forces have more than 30 regiments equipped with
S-300 missile system, which will all eventually be re-equipped with the
S-400s. Russia has sold the S-300 system to Iran.

'serious human rights abuses' against Palestinians.

body, in its report released on Wednesday, said that not only Israeli
soldiers but also Israeli settlers have violated human rights in
Palestinian occupied lands in 2006, AFP reported.
"Israeli soldiers and settlers committed serious human rights
abuses, including unlawful killings, against Palestinians, mostly with
impunity," said the Amnesty report.
It also said civilians bore the brunt of rising violence last year
between Israelis and Palestinians that saw a three-fold jump in
Palestinians killed.
In the Palestinian territories, Israeli air and artillery strikes killed
some 650 people, half of them unarmed civilians and including some 120
children [in 2006], "a threefold increase compared with 2005."
Amnesty International also blamed the regime for putting blockades and
restrictions on Palestinian residents, saying, "Military blockades
and increased restrictions imposed by Israel on the movement of
Palestinians and the confiscation by Israel of Palestinian custom duties
caused a significant deterioration in living conditions for Palestinian
inhabitants of the occupied territories, with poverty, food aid
dependency, health problems and unemployment reaching crisis
levels."
The Zionist regime began withholding taxes collected on behalf of the
Palestinian Authority after Islamic Resistance Hamas democratically came
to power in 2006.
