“Mr. President, You Did Not Listen!”

" Mr. President, you are not listening..." In an act of defiance perhaps not seen since President Truman fired Gen. Douglas MacArthur, the anti-war veterans group VoteVets.org, which has been influential with Capitol Hill Democrats, is launching a half-million-dollar TV ad campaign featuring Maj Gen John Batiste (Ret.), former commanding general of the first infantry division in Iraq.

Gates Contradicts Bush, Says ‘I Don’t Know’ If 2002 War Authorization Is Still Valid

5.9.07

(Excerpt)

During todays Senate Armed Services Committee hearing, Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he doesnt know whether the 2002 resolution authorizing force in Iraq is still valid, acknowledging that his view differs with that of President Bush.

During his questioning of Gates, Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV) noted that the authorization listed two purposes for the use of force:

1)    to defend the United States against Saddam Hussein and

2)    enforce U.N. resolutions against Husseins government.

Byrd asked Gates, since Husseins government no longer exists, do you agree that this authorization no longer applies to the ongoing conflict in Iraq?

Gates responded: I think the honest answer, Senator Byrd, is that I dont know the answer to that question. Gates admitted that his answer contradicts that of the President, who believes the resolution still continues to authorize the actions that we are taking in Iraq.

Are Americans ‘Good Germans’?   Putin Is Said to Compare US Policies to Third Reich

By Andrew E. Kramer

New York Times

5.10.07

(Excerpt)

In a speech in Munich on Feb. 10, he [Putin] characterized the United States as “One single center of power: One single center of force. One single center of decision making. This is the world of one master, one sovereign.”

MOSCOW, May 9 President Vladimir V. Putin seemed to obliquely compare the foreign policy of the United States to the Third Reich in a speech on Wednesday commemorating the 62nd anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany.

The comments were the latest in a series of sharply worded Russian criticisms of the foreign policy of the United States on Iraq, missile defense, NATO expansion and, more broadly, United States unilateralism in foreign affairs.
